How to Measure for a Custom Cover
How to measure for a custom cover
A cover only protects what it fits. Here is the simple way to measure any piece so your National Canvas cover comes out snug, clean, and built to last. Take your time, write the numbers down, and round up to the nearest inch.
The three measurements we need
- Width (A): the longest side, left to right, at the widest point.
- Depth (B): front to back at the widest point.
- Height (C): from the ground or surface it sits on, up to the tallest point.
Always measure the widest, deepest, and tallest points, including handles, knobs, shelves, and arms. We build the cover to clear them.
Tips for a perfect fit
- Use a steel tape, not a cloth one, for accuracy.
- Measure the object, not an old cover. Old covers stretch and shrink.
- Round up to the nearest inch. A little room is good; too tight is not.
- For a floor-length look, measure height to the ground. For a tabletop look, measure to just below the lip.
By item
- Grills and smokers: width with side shelves where they normally sit, depth including the handle, height to the top of the lid or chimney.
- Furniture: overall width arm to arm, depth front to back, height to the top of the cushions or back.
- Fire pits and round tables: diameter at the widest point and total height.
- AC units and generators: width, depth, and height of the unit, and note any pipes or conduit.
- Tables: length, width, and the drop you want (how far the cover hangs down).
